Australian Geography Series: Year 3

For Ages: Year 3 Year 3 - Places Are Similar and Different is part of the Australian Geography Series which comprises nine books in total. This book has been written specifically for students in Year 3, who are living in Australia and studying Geography. The activity book has been divided into three sections: Exploring Places, Understanding Maps and Our Environment. Each section is closely linked to the new Australian National Curriculum for Geography. They will look in-depth at Australia’s neighbouring countries and draw conclusions from their studies. In Section 2, Understanding Maps, activities and tasks are designed to build mapping skills in a variety of map types including: weather, political, natural resources and floor plans. Students will be asked to locate places on a local, national and global scale using compass directions, grid references and scale. Special attention is given to the important information that is contained in a map’s title and key in determining a map’s purpose and usefulness. In Section 3, Our Environment, students are challenged to come up with solutions for managing our world’s dwindling resources. Tasks and activities are designed to help students think about sustainability on a local, national and global level. The study of an indigenous Dreaming story highlights how natural resource management is not a recent concept, but an age-old practice in the Australian context.
